Sabbatical Diary – Day 31

Posted on:

Plaque at Ness Point, Lowestoft, the most Easterly point in mainland Britain.

The plaque sits in the middle of a large round concrete area split into eight sections of alternating colours from the centre to the edge (like pieces of pizza), and looks a little like a compass. Around the edge are listed different places, their significance and their direction.

Places mentioned include

Ardnamurchan Point

John o’Groats and Dunnet Head, all of which I have already visited on this trip, and

Lizard Point and Land’s End, where I am due to be in the next week or so. Kind of fun.

I have been to Ness Point before. I was on a very silly trip that started and ended in Cinderford, but included Land’s End to John o’Groats in a day, visits to Dunnet Head and Ardnamurchan Point on the way to Lowestoft, then Ness Point to Land’s End in one day (via a bunch of Harley dealers as part of an organised event). Oh, and I went across to Llanelli to see Sian on the way back. (Well not exactly ‘on the way’, but you know what I mean.) The point being: I’ve always been a bit mad. The guy who organised the Ness Point to Land’s End run thought that was a big deal and was blown away by what I was doing. He nicknamed me ‘All Points Mike’ and had a patch made for me, which I was given at the next Harley Owners Group rally I went to.

Anyway, it was nice to be back there again. The last time I was there I took the bike onto the plaque for a photo, but I didn’t do that with the trike as there were too many people around (and the trike wouldn’t fit through the bollards anyway!).

Good day. Bright. Sunny. Dry. Lots of lovely villages. And occasional sightings of the sea.

These are the photos I was trying to load yesterday, that show why you can’t see the sea in Lincolnshire:

In Orford tonight and visiting Orfordness tomorrow morning before travelling to Frinton on Sea.

God bless.
