Sabbatical Diary – Day 1

Posted on:

Up bright and early. A time of prayer followed by a good breakfast set me up for a day’s riding. On the road near Chester, but briefly into Wales to cross into England for the ‘official’ start of the trip.

It had been wet overnight, and showers were forecast, but I had a dry day, with lots of sunshine later on.

Good memories travelling around the Wirral of places that Rachel, Sarah and Joe enjoyed when they were young. Passed our old house. Visited lighthouses at Leasowe and New Brighton before heading u

nder the Mersey Tunnel (a trip I used to take to work every day) and up past Liverpool docks. A run along the coast past Southport then in to Preston (and a quick, unplanned, visit to Preston Harley Davidson) then back out to Lytham St Annes, Blackpool and Fleetwood.

Staying at The North Euston Hotel, where Queen Victoria once stayed on a trip to Scotland. Back in the day, you couldn’t get all the way to Scotland by train. You would travel to Fleetwood by train, possibly stay overnight (hence North Euston Hotel), then travel by boat to Ardrossan and complete the journey by train! Quite a trip.

Thought the photo was a nice image for the trip.

118 miles. 6 lighthouses (if you include Blackpool Tower which does carry a light to guide shipping!). No rain. All good.
